The Federal Government has announced an upward revision of passport fees in Nigeria, effective September 1, 2025, in a bid to improve service delivery, curb corruption, and protect the integrity of the Nigerian passport.
🆕 New Fee Structure (Nigeria-only applications):
- 32-page, 5-year validity: N100,000
- 64-page, 10-year validity: N200,000
Nigerians in the diaspora will continue to pay:
- $150 for 32-page (5-year)
- $230 for 64-page (10-year)
🛂 Government’s Justification
According to Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the hike:
- Will guarantee one-week passport delivery
- Ends the era of delays and bribery (previously up to 7 months or N200,000 in bribes)
- Is backed by new infrastructure, including Africa’s largest passport personalization center, enabling rapid production
“My own daughter’s experience was terrible. We had to pay hundreds of thousands to get her passport,” the minister said, stressing the need for systemic reform.
🔧 Key Reforms
- No more approvals by Passport Control Officers (PCOs): All approvals now centralized to eliminate bottlenecks and corruption.
- Faster processing: Applications to be vetted within 24 hours of enrolment.
- Enhanced identity verification: Ensuring only Nigerians receive passports to preserve national credibility.
🧾 Why It Matters
This is the second hike in under two years (previous increase was in 2024), and while the government says it’s about efficiency and integrity, many Nigerians are likely to feel the pinch of the significantly higher costs.
