Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday paid a courtesy visit to the palace of the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, in Oyo Town.
The visit was Obasanjo’s first to the monarch since his coronation as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo in April 2025.
Accompanied by his daughter, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, and a delegation of dignitaries, the former president was warmly received at the historic palace. While details of their discussions were not disclosed as of press time, the meeting was described as cordial.
The visit comes amid heightened tension within the Yoruba traditional council, following Oba Owoade’s recent criticism of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. The Alaafin publicly challenged the Ooni’s conferment of the title “Okanlomo of Yorubaland” on Ibadan-based businessman Dotun Sanusi, arguing that no single monarch holds the authority to grant a title covering the entire Yorubaland.
Obasanjo’s visit is seen by observers as significant, given his longstanding influence in Yoruba affairs and ongoing efforts to maintain unity among traditional institutions in the region.
