More details have emerged about the tragic stabbing that occurred in the Balogun Market area of Lagos Island, resulting in the death of a young trader, Sodiq Ibrahim.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, the altercation was between two members of “Oso Ahia”, a group of freelance market hustlers who guide customers to shops in exchange for commissions. Trouble reportedly started over the sharing of an N8,000 commission, given by a shop owner after both hustlers claimed to have brought in a customer.
Witnesses say a heated argument broke out, escalating into violence. Ibrahim, said to be from Kogi State, reportedly stabbed Ebuka Adindu, from Abia State, with a bottle before fleeing. Adindu allegedly chased him down and fatally stabbed him in return.
The Lagos State Police Command, through spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the details and dismissed any claims of ethnic tension, stating clearly that the incident was an isolated criminal case.
“Adindu in turn stabbed himself on the shoulder and became unconscious. He is currently under arrest at the hospital. He will be prosecuted upon recovery,” Hundeyin stated.
Traders in the area also refuted online rumors of tribal conflict, emphasizing that the clash was solely over money. A temporary disruption to business followed the incident, but market activities resumed the next day, with some traders now calling for the ban of hustlers (Oso Ahia boys) from the market.
