Senegal secured the bronze medal at the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Sudan on Friday in Kampala.
The defending champions fought back from an early setback to earn a 1-1 draw in regulation time at Mandela Stadium, before clinching the win in the shootout.
Sudan took the lead in the 6th minute through Mohamed Tia Asad’s header from a corner, but Senegal equalised just before the hour mark when Seyni Mbaye converted a cross from Ousseynou Seck.
Sudan nearly stole it late on, but Maaz Koko missed a clear chance with eight minutes remaining.
In the shootout, Senegal held their nerve with Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cissé, and Libasse Gueye all scoring. Sudan’s Walieldin Khidir and Musab Makeen missed their spot-kicks.
The bronze medal offers some consolation for the Lions of Teranga, who were edged out 5-3 on penalties by Morocco in the semi-finals after a 1-1 draw.
Morocco, two-time CHAN champions, are set to face Madagascar in the final on Saturday in Nairobi.
