Defending champions Senegal secured the bronze medal at the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a 4-2 penalty shootout win over Sudan on Friday in Kampala.
The Lions of Teranga came from behind to force a 1-1 draw in regulation time at Mandela Stadium. Sudan had taken an early lead in the 6th minute through Mohamed Tia Asad’s header from a corner. But Senegal equalized shortly before the hour mark when Seyni Mbaye converted a cross from Ousseynou Seck.
Sudan nearly snatched a late winner, but Maaz Koko missed a clear chance with just eight minutes remaining.
In the shootout, Senegal converted four of their spot-kicks through Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cissé, and Libasse Gueye. Sudan’s Walieldin Khidir and Musab Makeen failed to convert, handing Senegal the win.
The result offers some consolation for Senegal, who were beaten 5-3 on penalties by Morocco in the semi-finals after another 1-1 draw.
Morocco, the two-time champions, will face Madagascar in the final on Saturday in Nairobi.
